Edible (Suburban) Community

I just came across this video about a suburban community in San Luis Obispo (CA) that has come together to grow edibles in people’s backyards. The story is very much like the story about community gardens that are popping up all over the urban landscape…but these folks are using people’s backyards and, anyone helping with the gardening gets their share of the food. So it’s a community garden within a garden.

The 3-minute video’s a project of Working for Green, “a video-based web community showcasing innovative ways to save money and find meaningful work during this challenging economic time.” This is definitely an interesting story about a couple of folks who have started a business planting these gardens…so they’re “making money”; and a community that joins in and benefits from sharing the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor…and they’re “saving money”.

On the video page, there are a list of tips on how someone can further save money or make money based around this theme of food gardens. It’s interesting information that I already knew about…but which may be of great use to people who are starting off in the slow food arena; people who are interested in lowering their ecological footprint by eating more locally and organically raised foods.

Looking out onto the horizon of our current economy, these are all heartening stories. I love the idea of gardening for a living…but in a controlled environment where all of the gardening tools and “equipment” are paid for by the homeowner. I just wish that I had a green thumb so that I could start a business like this in my (suburban) neighborhood. Either way, food gardens are popping up all over the place and this is simply inspiring…and on so many levels!
